{"id":2018,"date":"2013-08-14T19:44:58","date_gmt":"2013-08-14T18:44:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=2018"},"modified":"2015-04-02T23:30:08","modified_gmt":"2015-04-02T22:30:08","slug":"baltic-cycling-tour-sventoj-karosta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/baltic-cycling-tour-sventoj-karosta","title":{"rendered":"Baltic Cycling Tour #3: from Sventoj to Karosta (entering Latvia!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe src=\"https:\/\/connect.garmin.com:80\/activity\/embed\/358127944\" width=\"465\" height=\"548\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center>After a difficult <a title=\"Baltic Cycling Tour: from Kl\u00e1ip\u00e9da to Sventoj\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/baltic-cycling-tour-klaipeda-sventoj\">second day<\/a> of our tour, the third stage was for me the hardest.<\/p>\n<p>We started cycling a bit after 8am, following the A11 road.<\/p>\n<p>It was a boring main road but at least there were almost no cars till the border with Latvia, that we crossed after taking the ritual pictures \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-mXLNIiCUFM8\/UgqZOg0DXdI\/AAAAAAAAGm0\/E_dKxO5SDSY\/s0\/IMG_3423.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2018] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-mXLNIiCUFM8\/UgqZOg0DXdI\/AAAAAAAAGm0\/E_dKxO5SDSY\/w400-o\/IMG_3423.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_3423.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\u00a0We stopped in Rucava, a little village, in order to get some breakfast and cash in the local currency (LATS).<\/p>\n<p>A car pass by. Then comes back. It has an Italian license plate.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s how we met Stefano, a man from Pesaro that with his Latvian wife just bought an holiday home of 150 m2 with a garden for the equivalent of&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;. 17.500 EUR!<br \/>\nHe invited us for a coffee and to meet his family.<br \/>\nThanks Stefano and good luck with the renovation works! You could have bought a new Fiat 500 but you got yourself a castle instead.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-ckgm_as-55o\/UgqZVfN292I\/AAAAAAAAGnU\/KKZT51JLZXU\/s0\/IMG_3429.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2018] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-ckgm_as-55o\/UgqZVfN292I\/AAAAAAAAGnU\/KKZT51JLZXU\/w400-o\/IMG_3429.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_3429.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stefano&#8217;s family in their new house<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">We continued cycling with a good pace and enjoying the sunny day till we were about 30km away from Liepaja, our almost-destination because Karosta is just after Liepaja.<\/p>\n<p>I insisted to abandon this boring A11 and venture in the bike path&#8230;.\u00a0What a genius idea!<\/p>\n<p>Also there, like the day before, an unpaved road was waiting us and we had gravel-fun for 15km.<\/p>\n<p>Our legs, speed and moral got hit pretty hard and once back on the A11 we were both pretty tired.<br \/>\nAdd a <del>strong<\/del> noticeable wind against us and a grumpy person in our group (I won&#8217;t disclose the name for respect of him) to complete the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily we found a great camping where we had a fantastic time: a delicious cheese salad, \u00a0meat on a skew, and fast Internet!<\/p>\n<p>One thing that impressed us, and that we noticed all around Latvia, is that food is presented extremely well.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, we were in a camping in the middle of nothing and check how carefully presented are those dishes:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-jfVCIprnruM\/UgqZkNZt0aI\/AAAAAAAAGoM\/zDsjxlFEFJg\/s0\/IMG_3439.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2018] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-jfVCIprnruM\/UgqZkNZt0aI\/AAAAAAAAGoM\/zDsjxlFEFJg\/w400-o\/IMG_3439.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_3439.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Super cheese salad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-PpU-IS9T_-c\/UgqZly-YmmI\/AAAAAAAAGoU\/X7xkLZHyeBg\/s0\/IMG_3440.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2018] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-PpU-IS9T_-c\/UgqZly-YmmI\/AAAAAAAAGoU\/X7xkLZHyeBg\/w400-o\/IMG_3440.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_3440.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Super bbq meat on a skew<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">After some rest we continued fighting the wind until we reached Liepaja, where my GPS watch went out of battery (the data above is in fact incomplete).<\/p>\n<p>But OK, we were almost there. We just had to cross the town in order to reach the mighty ghost town of Karosta.<\/p>\n<p>Karosta is really one of the most surreal places I&#8217;ve been.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a port area, used as military area by the Soviets. It used to have 20.000 inhabitants but after the USSR collapsed&#8230; in no time everyone left and only few thousands people stayed!<\/p>\n<p>Everywhere there are abandoned, empty buildings in Soviet style.<\/p>\n<p>It was indeed the perfect place to spend a <a title=\"Karosta Prison\" href=\"https:\/\/karostascietums.lv\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">night in prison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"  \" src=\"https:\/\/clach.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/bike-017-copia.jpg?w=1000&amp;h=\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entering the prison<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We reached the prison of Karosta just in time to check-in.<br \/>\nI was so tired that I was feeling exhausted, physically ill.<br \/>\nWell after 9pm we had the prison tour, and we got told that this was a military prison originally, used to &#8216;re-educate&#8217; disobedient soldiers that were sent here for just few days.
