{"id":2043,"date":"2013-08-18T21:36:04","date_gmt":"2013-08-18T20:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=2043"},"modified":"2014-03-21T18:10:41","modified_gmt":"2014-03-21T17:10:41","slug":"baltic-cycling-tour-6-riga-sigulda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/baltic-cycling-tour-6-riga-sigulda","title":{"rendered":"Baltic Cycling Tour #6: from Riga to Sigulda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><iframe src=\"https:\/\/connect.garmin.com:80\/activity\/embed\/358127852\" height=\"548\" width=\"465\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center>In Riga we participate to the Couchsurfing event &#8220;Riga Good Time&#8221; and ended up sleeping at a \u00a0sauna party.<\/p>\n<p>Latvia confirms itself as a very creative place for accommodations, with an <a title=\"Baltic Cycling Tour #3: from Sventoj to Karosta (entering Latvia!)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/baltic-cycling-tour-sventoj-karosta\" target=\"_blank\">ex-prison<\/a>, an <a title=\"Baltic Cycling Tour #5: from Kuldiga to Sabile\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/baltic-cycling-tour-5-kuldiga-sabile\" target=\"_blank\">ex-hospital<\/a> and now a sauna!<\/p>\n<p>We also spent one afternoon in Jurmala, some 30km away from Riga and with beautiful and crowded sand beaches.<br \/>\nI was surprise to notice that the Baltic Sea is warmer than the North Sea (currently: 20C vs 17C!) and that swimming in it doesn&#8217;t require a long wet-suite.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the cycling part, we left Riga in the late morning and took the A2\/E77 highway.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, driving in the highway is legal here, and it was supposed to be nice for cyclists as well but to be honest it was quite shitty.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-fNPN9EfWpqI\/UhEuifiPTPI\/AAAAAAAAG2E\/avqnEZl3kKo\/s0\/IMG_3595.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2043] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" alt=\"A2\/E77 highway\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-fNPN9EfWpqI\/UhEuifiPTPI\/AAAAAAAAG2E\/avqnEZl3kKo\/w400-o\/IMG_3595.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leaving Riga on the A2\/E77 highway &#8211; say YEAH!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">The emergency line was OK but every time there was an exit\/entrance the bikes were indicated to follow complex paths often ending up nowhere &#8211; so after few detours we decided to stay on the highway avoiding cars instead.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the highway isn&#8217;t the most inspiring view, but the long uphills and downhills were providing some variety.<\/p>\n<p>In the last 10K we gained elevation reaching Sigulda, a place we heard many good things about.<\/p>\n<p>I confirm that it&#8217;s a very nice place.<\/p>\n<p>First of all also this time the accommodation was very interesting: an ex-school! It was so cool that we decided to spend there two nights.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-zbsIEacyIkA\/UhEtViN00WI\/AAAAAAAAG0Y\/tgWhmKjvxgs\/s0\/IMG_3611.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2043] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sleeping in the ex-school, great value for money\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-zbsIEacyIkA\/UhEtViN00WI\/AAAAAAAAG0Y\/tgWhmKjvxgs\/w400-o\/IMG_3611.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sleeping in the ex-school, great value for money (9 Lat\/night)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Second, Sigulda proved to be a quiet place with a beautiful nature.
