{"id":2516,"date":"2014-03-25T15:51:30","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T14:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=2516"},"modified":"2014-03-25T16:12:14","modified_gmt":"2014-03-25T15:12:14","slug":"bolaven-plateau-loop-day-5-attapeu-paksong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/bolaven-plateau-loop-day-5-attapeu-paksong","title":{"rendered":"Bolaven Plateau loop day 5: From Attapeu to Paksong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em><em>First the smell of the trucks leaving Attapeu, then the smoke from the fires that seem everywhere in this season, and finally the dust of the road under construction while we&#8217;re hunting for waterfalls, today has been definitely the dirtier of the Bolaven Plateau loop!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In between an Internet fix and another Vietnamese coffee, we left an already excruciating Attapeu around 10:42 in direction north after having seen nothing around it.<\/p>\n<p>At Bane Beng we turn left on the road to Paksong, where we started looking for the Tad Alane waterfall that was very much recommended by the Belgium Frenchy of Miss Noy.<br \/>\nWe took the so called &#8220;new road&#8221; just completed, running between the mountains, but to be honest they still have quite some work to do over there!<\/p>\n<p>The paved road is alternating with different levels on <em>&#8220;unpaved-ness&#8221;<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gravel roads, quite annoying as they require the lowest speed<\/li>\n<li>Red soil roads, very dusty but easy to drive on with a good pace<\/li>\n<li>Sand roads, kind of OK but trick as the sand easily gets bumpy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We become progressively dirtier, but I find roads under construction very charming.<br \/>\nBig cranes, caterpillars, trucks and all sort of machinery are making disappearing what we experience today in matter of few weeks or months.<br \/>\nFuture travelers will have a different experience!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-sNaeW-7t1p4\/UzF1RuiY-bI\/AAAAAAAAIT0\/ydFn4AdawuM\/s0\/IMG_3511.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2516] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"Completing the road\" alt=\"Completing the road\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-sNaeW-7t1p4\/UzF1RuiY-bI\/AAAAAAAAIT0\/ydFn4AdawuM\/w400-o\/IMG_3511.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Completing the road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Tad Katamtok: 100m tall<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We found Tad Katamtok thanks to a random encounter with a couple of fellow travelers. They were also confused because between new road, old road, non existent signaling and unseen temples, it&#8217;s really not easy to find those damn waterfalls!<\/p>\n<p>Tad Katamtok waterfall is more than 100m tall and quite spectacular.<br \/>\nWe tried to find a trail to reach the base of the waterfall, but all the trails ended up in nothing or in some burned tree.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Tad Sekatamtok\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-FumNu9g0lZ8\/UzF1Cnhnd4I\/AAAAAAAAITM\/qZilvD6YGk0\/s0\/IMG_3503.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2516] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo \" title=\"Tad Sekatamtok\" alt=\"Tad Katamtok\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-FumNu9g0lZ8\/UzF1Cnhnd4I\/AAAAAAAAITM\/qZilvD6YGk0\/w400-o\/IMG_3503.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tad Katamtok<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Tad\u00a0Alang: stunning beauty &amp; lush surroundings<\/h2>\n<p>This was the waterfall we were looking for when we found Tad Katamtok, but we were on the wrong road.<br \/>\nAfter reaching Bane Nong Oy and had a lunch with two French couples also riding around the Bolaven Plateau, I convinced my Travel Coach that we should at least see the best waterfall of the whole loop.<br \/>\nHe was grumpy, tired and cocky but he thought me a great lesson: <strong>sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for your travel companion<\/strong>. So we drove back on the &#8220;old road&#8221; searching for the\u00a0<em>fata morgana<\/em> of all waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;old road&#8221; is more difficult and completely on red soil. Sometimes we crossed a jeep and we almost could not see anything for few seconds!<\/p>\n<p>To reach the waterfall we followed the sign for &#8220;Tayeuukseua guest-house&#8221; and when we reached we were puzzled by the signs:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-W6xrQ7Ucbxo\/UzGOGGu0FaI\/AAAAAAAAIVs\/BPDsoDKcOdo\/s0\/IMG_3514.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2516] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo \" title=\"Freshly painted signs\" alt=\"Freshly painted signs\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-W6xrQ7Ucbxo\/UzGOGGu0FaI\/AAAAAAAAIVs\/BPDsoDKcOdo\/w400-o\/IMG_3514.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshly painted signs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">Then a friendly man came to help us. It turned out that they&#8217;re building this new guest house and those are the new signs he prepared yesterday!<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">We left the scooters there and continued walking for 10 minutes to Tad Alang: what a beauty!<br \/>\nThe waterfall is impressive, it&#8217;s like a giant cave and the amount of water strayed around created a lush surrounding.<br \/>\nWith no further ado, here is the video (watch out from the eastern egg!).<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Tad Alang waterfall in Bolaven Plateau - Laos\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xKHnFiZYC4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\n<p class=\"clear\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-OcKOc9aZh6A\/UzF1Zp3hSeI\/AAAAAAAAIUM\/2FelkO21Mco\/s0\/IMG_3522_1.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2516] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" alt=\"IMG_3522_1.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-OcKOc9aZh6A\/UzF1Zp3hSeI\/AAAAAAAAIUM\/2FelkO21Mco\/w400-o\/IMG_3522_1.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">Unfortunately another tough lesson of travel coaching was ahead of me today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">Once back to our scooters, the friendly man asked us to pay 10.000 kip each: 5.000 for the motorbike parking and 5.000 for visiting the waterfalls!<br \/>\nI tried to impress my Jedi Knight, explaining to the friendly man that next time he should ask people to pay on arrival, not after!<br \/>\nI thought that this was good karma and as money is energy, we could have made good energy circulating even if this man was clearly taking advantage of our spiritual enlightenment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">Instead, Cloudio was disappointed by my forgiveness because he had to pay the equivalent to 0.45\u20ac extra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">The lesson was <strong>the noble value of justice is more important then money<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Reaching Paksong<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-5WIqfaURexA\/UzF4VXpAOhI\/AAAAAAAAIVI\/hnYqYi5qFig\/s0\/IMG_3529.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2516] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"Dirty and tired\" alt=\"Dirty and tired\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-5WIqfaURexA\/UzF4VXpAOhI\/AAAAAAAAIVI\/hnYqYi5qFig\/w300-o\/IMG_3529.JPG\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dirty and tired<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dirty and tired, we were back on the road around 16:33, with one desire: reaching Paksong and have a warm shower.<br \/>\nThe air was getting colder and colder and we had to stop twice to add layer of clothes: first a long sleeve shirt, then a jumper. At least I didn&#8217;t carry them around for 5 days for nothing!<\/p>\n<p>But the road to Paksong was boring and the old paradox of Achilles and the tortoise came back to my mind.<br \/>\nTo reach the tortoise, Achilles has to run half of the distance first. But to run half that distance, he has to run half the half distance.
