{"id":2524,"date":"2014-03-26T17:25:37","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T16:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=2524"},"modified":"2014-03-26T18:34:32","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T17:34:32","slug":"bolaven-plateau-loop-day-6-paksong-pakse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/bolaven-plateau-loop-day-6-paksong-pakse","title":{"rendered":"Bolaven Plateau loop day 6: From Paksong to Pakse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The last day of our Bolaven Plateau loop was a splurging day: fruity coffee, burn coffee, good coffee and kopi luwak coffee were the highlight of the day, topped by excellent Vietnamese food and a pizza.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 5th and last day of our loop won&#8217;t be remembered for the road trip.<br \/>\nThe last 50km, from Paksong back to Pakse, were nothing special, confirming that the Bolavan Plateau loop <strong>is not really a spectacular motorbike setting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What made today great, was the best product of <strong>Paksong, Lao coffee capital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We heard about <strong>Mr Coffee<\/strong>, a Dutchman living in Paksong running very passionate coffee tours.<br \/>\nA passionate Dutchman?! That was definitely something to experience!<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-fsm2_qAzgSA\/UzLsry_R-oI\/AAAAAAAAIWI\/YNruVmbbZWw\/s0\/IMG_3532.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2524] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"JHAI, don't miss it!\" alt=\"JHAI, don't miss it!\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-fsm2_qAzgSA\/UzLsry_R-oI\/AAAAAAAAIWI\/YNruVmbbZWw\/w300-o\/IMG_3532.JPG\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">JHAI, don&#8217;t miss it!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We started early the quest for Mr Coffee and landed at <a title=\"JHAI Coffee House\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jhaicoffeehouse.com\" target=\"_blank\">JHAI Coffee House<\/a>\u00a0where a couple of\u00a0<strong>Seattleite<\/strong>\u00a0served us a very special mid-roasted coffee very fruity. It tasted like dirty water at first, but after few seconds the aroma exploded and we liked it!<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The place has a very nice concept, it&#8217;s a <strong>&#8220;philanthropic coffee roaster&#8221;<\/strong> meaning that all the profits are re-invested into local initiatives of sanitary education for children.<\/p>\n<p>But there were no trace of Mr Coffee here.<\/p>\n<p>Next stop was in a coffee and tea plantation along the way. Actually we stopped because Cloudio felt a disturbance in his force, and we both felt a disturbance in our stomach after a sip of the horrendous filtered coffee.<br \/>\nThe producers of the best coffee beans aren&#8217;t necessary good coffee <em>baristas<\/em>, like the best Salsa dancers are not necessarily the best dance instructors, but if you want to learn how to swim you don&#8217;t need an hydraulic engineer, so what?<\/p>\n<p>Luckily they saved the face with <strong>a delicious green tea<\/strong>. I never heard of coffee and tea plantations on the same spot, do you?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Mr Coffee had nothing to do with this place either.<\/p>\n<p>We had to drive back 12km, back to Paksong, to finally run into Mr Coffee shop called <strong>&#8220;Coffee is Coffee&#8221;<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe man seemed straightforward like the name of his shop. Coffee is all he needs, and you should not need anything more either when you&#8217;re around him!<br \/>\nIt was 1pm so we had time for lunch before the daily tour starting at 2pm. He recommended us a simple restaurant and WOW, the place was basic but real value for money! We were convinced: <strong>Mr Coffee is the man<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The tour was packed of information, and made look the coffee visit of <a title=\"Visiting Salento coffee plantation\" href=\"https:\/\/www.salsawalkabout.com\/2011\/08\/17\/visiting-salento-in-the-zona-cafetera-of-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\">Don Elias coffee plantation\u00a0in Salento, in the Eje Cafetero of Colombia<\/a> a primary school trip.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 410px;\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Arabica plant\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-UEkchYFA1ic\/UzLuOfYQlpI\/AAAAAAAAIW4\/L3BTigObw4Y\/s0\/IMG_3544.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2524] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo aligncenter\" title=\"Arabica plant\" alt=\"IMG_3544.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-UEkchYFA1ic\/UzLuOfYQlpI\/AAAAAAAAIW4\/L3BTigObw4Y\/w400-o\/IMG_3544.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arabica plant<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 410px;\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Robusta plant\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-k4mBsLM004g\/UzLuy2lmzuI\/AAAAAAAAIXI\/RMIc1h8cBg0\/s0\/IMG_3548.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2524] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo aligncenter\" title=\"Robusta plant\" alt=\"IMG_3548.JPG\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-k4mBsLM004g\/UzLuy2lmzuI\/AAAAAAAAIXI\/RMIc1h8cBg0\/w400-o\/IMG_3548.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robusta plant<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Coffee is not the sophisticated type of coffee drinker over-complicating stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He&#8217;s more of the &#8220;whatever works&#8221; type.<\/strong><br \/>\nHe advocates that the coffee quality is more important than the preparation method used, and recommends to try the same coffee in different machines to see where it tastes better.<\/p>\n<p>He also prefers preparing coffee with <strong>Italians<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>moka pots<\/strong>, and he was the initiator of this trend now embraced by all the coffee shops around the Bolaven Plateau!<\/p>\n<p>Our tour around the plantation was interrupted by a good half hour of heavy rain, <i>pijpen stelen regen<\/i> they would say in the motherland of Mr Coffee. A country he left years ago with destination a small village in the Isam area of Thailand.<br \/>\n<em>&#8220;I choose it because there was an hospital and an airport&#8221;<\/em> he said,\u00a0pragmatic as a Dutch can be.<\/p>\n<p>After the tour we decided to continue the splurging trying one of the best coffee in the world: the <em>kopi luwak<\/em>,.<br \/>\nOriginally from Indonesia, the <em>luwak<\/em>\u00a0irreverent cats are also present in this region of Laos and thanks to their digestive system we could enjoy a cup of very heavy coffee that made us feel a bit spaced out.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"With Mr Coffee\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-xB_i4UFUNow\/UzLvtX7FcBI\/AAAAAAAAIXw\/Lc3wDVa95G4\/s0\/IMG_3556.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2524] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"With Mr Coffee\" alt=\"With Mr Coffee\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-xB_i4UFUNow\/UzLvtX7FcBI\/AAAAAAAAIXw\/Lc3wDVa95G4\/w400-o\/IMG_3556.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">With Mr Coffee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We thanked Mr Coffee with 75.000 kip (7\u20ac) (50.000 for the coffee tour, plus 25.000 for the <em>kopi luwak<\/em> cup) and drove the 50km back to Pakse where we checked in the Lankham hotel (60.000 kip double room with fan).
