and so I did <a title=\"Bolaven Plateau by scooter: From Pakse to Champasak\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/bolaven-plateau-scooter-pakse-champasak\" target=\"_blank\">the first day, when we visited Champasak<\/a>. As you can read in the report, the experience was so bad that I gave in and asked for a scooter instead.<\/p>\n<p>It turned out to be a great decision because in the Bolaven Plateau the <strong>roads are bad<\/strong>, pick-up trucks drive like maniacs and there are plenty of animals unaware of the rules of the road.<br \/>\nIn an emergency situation the scooter felt much safer than the semi-automatic <a title=\"Motorbike Posts\" href=\"\/blog\/motorbike\" target=\"_blank\">I drove quite some thousands kilometers on motorbikes<\/a>\u00a0in my life.<\/p>\n<p>We rented our vehicles at <strong>Miss Noy<\/strong>, a place run by a bossy girl (Noy) and her Belgian husband.<br \/>\nEveryday around 7pm he run a workshop explaining where to go and what to see in the Bolaven Plateau, providing also an useful map.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that rental prices are the same as the other places, the only good reason not to rent from Miss Noy is if they run out of motorbikes, that is very likely in high season.<\/p>\n<p>They do constant maintenance to the motorbikes, but don&#8217;t expect a perfect machine and helmet&#8230; the quality is <em>so-so<\/em>\u00a0but it&#8217;s hard to believe than others are better. Anyway I suggest to listen to their explanation and then choose.<\/p>\n<p>All the rental shops offer<strong> free storage for your luggage<\/strong>, so you&#8217;ve to select carefully what to bring with you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Prepping up<\/h2>\n<p>Almost all around Bolaven Plateau is hellish hot. I say\u00a0<em>almost<\/em>, because around <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Paksong\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paksong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Paksong<\/a>, that sits at 1200m altitude, the air turns fresh and long sleeves, a jumper and long trousers are required!<br \/>\nWith temperatures around 20C, it&#8217;s not really cold, but riding a motorbike <strong>will<\/strong> feel cold so you&#8217;re warned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>On the Road<\/h2>\n<p>The Bolaven Plateau is not a motorbike paradise, no question about it.<br \/>\nLast month I drove in north-Thailand <a title=\"In scooter from Chiang Mai to Pai, the hospital of Thailand\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/scooter-chiang-mai-pai-hospital-thailand\" target=\"_blank\">from Chiang Mai to Pai<\/a> and hai-hai-hai, that was serious <strong>fun<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-t7ll8wsrxGc\/UzF1NinNf_I\/AAAAAAAAITs\/406yQc2fVB0\/s0\/IMG_3510.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2539] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"The &quot;new road&quot; just &quot;finished&quot;\" alt=\"The &quot;new road&quot; just &quot;finished&quot;\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-t7ll8wsrxGc\/UzF1NinNf_I\/AAAAAAAAITs\/406yQc2fVB0\/w400-o\/IMG_3510.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The &#8220;new road&#8221; just &#8220;finished&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Bolaven Plateau loop is not a fun ride.<br \/>\nDriving on those roads gave me different feelings. It&#8217;s a charming place where I \u00a0felt more an explorer than a rider: the roads under constructions, the poor indications leading to stunning waterfalls, the animals around, the excruciating heat, the spartan barracks next to the roads, the lives apparently spent waiting for a customer to stop by.<\/p>\n<p>I got used to all that too soon, but thinking about how people live in this area was a constant thought of mine.<\/p>\n<p>While thinking and driving, remember to keep one eye on the fuel level.<br \/>\nThere are more than enough gas stations in the area, but anyway I&#8217;ll state the obvious: don&#8217;t take risks \ud83d\ude09<br \/>\nIf needed, there are also unofficial gas stations selling fuel in 1 liter bottles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Accommodation<\/h2>\n<p>As always my <del>travel buddy<\/del>\u00a0travel coach Cloudio spoiled all the surprises and did petulantly choose all the places using his selection algorithm mixing Tripadvisor reviews, WikiTravel and blogs of strangers he considers &#8220;his friends&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to him we had quite some decent stays:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sailomyen Guest-House, Tad Lo: bungalows with river view for just 50.000 kip, really cool place. Occasionally they steal your stuff so beware. I didn&#8217;t find it worth the extra 100km to go there and back from Tad Lo, but well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attapeu<\/strong>: another unimpressive place, with not much to offer. On a second thought, you can experience Vietnam without need for VISA, as the whole area is very much Vietnam-<em>ized.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Internet in the Plateau<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-NoxzzXQqyz4\/Uy1yfrngh3I\/AAAAAAAAIEc\/9CegZsMWG2U\/s0\/IMG_3326.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[2539] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pe2-photo\" title=\"Not all the guest houses have Internet\" alt=\"Not all the guest houses have Internet\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-NoxzzXQqyz4\/Uy1yfrngh3I\/AAAAAAAAIEc\/9CegZsMWG2U\/w400-o\/IMG_3326.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not all the guest houses have Internet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not Facebook addicted, e-mail slave or Skype-dependent then congratulations, you belong to a rare specie.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, I&#8217;ve a good news and a bad news.<\/p>\n<p>First: Internet arrived to the Plateau! In the towns where we spent the nights there was Wi-Fi serving Internet from a 3G connection.<\/p>\n<p>Second: Internet is slow, sluggish, unstable and so the electric power.
