You get more comfortable and soon you notice things you couldn&#8217;t grasp before, when your nose was on a map or on a guide.<br \/>\nAnd it may happen that you even meet in the metro someone you know, like happened to me. Yes, that was the signal for me to move on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>For the first time since I started my\u00a0<em>walkabout<\/em>\u00a0I found a place I could live in: Medellin.<br \/>\nWhy?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>just because feels good \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>a very progressive city with open and beautiful people<\/li>\n<li>public areas well thought and utilized<\/li>\n<li>a climate that created the self-explanatory nickname of &#8220;city of the eternal spring&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>a transport system based on the unique metro in Colombia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But let&#8217;s not be fooled by the good things, behind the corner you can easily find people living in the street and very poor areas like every other city in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve spent 6 days there, here are the common and not-so-common things I&#8217;d recommend visiting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The metro<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Cultura Metro in Medellin\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-dJS4OgOUHvk\/TiCdChE2xgI\/AAAAAAAACJk\/g3LgPo4opkY\/IMG_1299.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[2627]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Cultura Metro in Medellin\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-dJS4OgOUHvk\/TiCdChE2xgI\/AAAAAAAACJk\/g3LgPo4opkY\/w200\/IMG_1299.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_1299.jpg\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cultura Metro in Medellin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ask Colombians about what to see in Medellin, and the first and second thing they&#8217;ll mention is the Metro.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about the metro as a tourist attraction may be funny for us, but Medellin is the only city in Colombia with a metro system, and what a metro system!<br \/>\nClean, efficient, modern. With information in both Spanish and English. To &#8220;educate&#8221; people they even promote the &#8220;metro colture&#8221; with practical notions as well as a beautiful &#8220;Smile! In a city devastated by the drug cartel just few years ago, a public park inviting people to walk around barefoot??<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Parque de los Pies Descalzos&#8221; is much more than this.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a place where walking barefoot is promoted as a way to relax and improve the wellbeing in accordance with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reflexology\" target=\"_blank\">reflexology<\/a>\u00a0alternative-medicine.<br \/>\nGuided tours running\u00a0<em>every hour\u00a0<\/em>take you\u00a0for a walk (barefoot indeed) on different surfaces: gravel, sand, grass, water, focusing on the different feelings that our feet are not used to perceive, trapped as they are into boring shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Finally someone that takes seriously the barefoot subculture!<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<figure style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thickbox\" title=\"barefooting\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-C6Ns2EOsCxQ\/ThKfI6be5KI\/AAAAAAAAB7k\/HuOJa4pMtsg\/IMG_1193.JPG\" rel=\"lightbox[2627]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"barefooting\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-C6Ns2EOsCxQ\/ThKfI6be5KI\/AAAAAAAAB7k\/HuOJa4pMtsg\/s150-c\/IMG_1193.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_1193.JPG\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">barefooting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<dl id=\"\">\n<dt>\u00a0<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Pablo Escobar Tour<\/h3>\n<div>\n<figure style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a class=\"thickbox\" title=\"me and Roberto Escobar\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-OkguMPwSsBQ\/ThKcRKPiB5I\/AAAAAAAABpo\/K2g4893h6Gc\/IMG_1096.JPG\" rel=\"lightbox[2627]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"me and Roberto Escobar\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-OkguMPwSsBQ\/ThKcRKPiB5I\/AAAAAAAABpo\/K2g4893h6Gc\/s150-c\/IMG_1096.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_1096.JPG\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">me and Roberto Escobar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OK, let me start saying that I never did cocaine and that I consider drug dealers as\u00a0<em>criminals<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>(Never the less I hope one day the majority of people will agree on legalizing drugs, and government will act upon that)<\/p>\n<p>In case you don&#8217;t know Pablo Escobar was the uber-famous &#8220;lord of drug&#8221; on top of the Medellin cartel.<\/p>\n<p>Brief story: shipping cocaine to US and cashing back something like 10.000.000USD\u00a0<strong>a week<\/strong>, by the time the police and governments realized what was going on with this new (by then) form of illecit traffic, he was way too rich, influential and powerful to be stopped.<\/p>\n<p>With his business ability, ruthless and violence Pablo Escobar made his way to politics and into the Colombia&#8217;s Congress and even offered to pay off the Colombia national debt!<br \/>\nWith his money he built an entire popular area of Medellin, making lots of friends ready to vote for him.<\/p>\n<p>He got killed in 1993 during a military operation to catch him.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a class=\"thickbox\" title=\"looking alike, but I have a slightly more honest job\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-6tzZcuHpa2s\/ThKcatNX5sI\/AAAAAAAABqQ\/M4BpywYTiQ0\/IMG_1102.JPG\" rel=\"lightbox[2627]\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"looking alike, but I have a slightly more honest job\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-6tzZcuHpa2s\/ThKcatNX5sI\/AAAAAAAABqQ\/M4BpywYTiQ0\/w200\/IMG_1102.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_1102.JPG\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">looking alike, but I have a slightly more honest job<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This\u00a0<em>controversial\u00a0<\/em>tour, advertised in the hostels, brings you to visit some &#8220;historic&#8221; places like the Escobar family grave on a private cemetery, and the house where he got shoot&#8230; house that funny enough is now occupied by an happy family saying &#8220;Buenos dias&#8221; to visitors every day!<\/p>\n<p>Last stop is the best: the house where the brother Roberto lives with his son Nicolas.<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re kind of building up an unofficial Escobar museum, putting together some pictures, a motorbike and a car supposedly owned by Pablito.<\/p>\n<p>You actually get to meet them and ask them what you want&#8230;
