{"id":3236,"date":"2015-08-09T21:02:30","date_gmt":"2015-08-09T20:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=3236"},"modified":"2015-08-22T10:16:02","modified_gmt":"2015-08-22T09:16:02","slug":"around-argentina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/around-argentina","title":{"rendered":"Around Argentina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <a title=\"One month in Buenos Aires\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/one-month-in-buenos-aires\">one month\u00a0in Buenos Aires<\/a> and <a title=\"10 days in Uruguay\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/10-days-in-uruguay\">10 days in Uruguay<\/a>, I took <strong>a 10 hours bus<\/strong> from Montevideo returning into Argentinian territory, where I visited the area of Cordoba and the mighty Iguaz\u00fa waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a small part of the whole Argentina. The country is big (ranks <strong>number 8<\/strong> for size) and moving around means long transfers I didn&#8217;t want to have.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Rosario<\/h2>\n<p>The three best things to see in Rosario are women, women and women.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s not a secret\u00a0that\u00a0<em>rosarinas<\/em>, the girls from Rosario, are the most beautiful women of Argentina (that means one of the most beautiful women in the world).<\/p>\n<p>What is a secret however, is <em>why<\/em> they are so beautiful. I asked every men I spoke to. They confirmed that girls are <em>tan bonitas<\/em>\u00a0but nobody knew why.<br \/>\nOne guy in the hostel told me because there&#8217;s the university. The man that changed my <em>blue dollars<\/em> said it&#8217;s because of the weather. Nothing makes sense but it&#8217;s true:\u00a0<em>rosarinas<\/em> are beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>And the good news don&#8217;t stop here. Rosario seems also a great place to live. There&#8217;s plenty of art, universities and\u00a0cultural activities. The\u00a0<em>costanera<\/em>, the area in front of the Paran\u00e1 river, it&#8217;s beautiful and has an open theater, bar, restaurants and an area with BBQ to rent (!).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-726TQ4WRkqM\/VcepCNlC9pI\/AAAAAAAALF8\/do2Fd7dkvqc\/s0\/IMG_4341.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-726TQ4WRkqM\/VcepCNlC9pI\/AAAAAAAALF8\/do2Fd7dkvqc\/w800-o\/IMG_4341.JPG\" alt=\"BBQ to rent in Rosario\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">BBQ to rent in Rosario<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the visitor it doesn&#8217;t offer much. I checked out the enormous monument to celebrate the\u00a0Argentinian flag, had lunch on the riverside and passed by the house where <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Che_Guevara\" target=\"_blank\">Ernesto\u00a0Guevara de la Serna<\/a>\u00a0was born the June 14, 1928. A small sign commemorate that, but\u00a0the house is now occupied by another family tired of asking the same questions to tourists.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-42izkVPB0wQ\/VcepF93XliI\/AAAAAAAALGM\/QlvsTLhlteo\/s0\/IMG_4334.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-42izkVPB0wQ\/VcepF93XliI\/AAAAAAAALGM\/QlvsTLhlteo\/w800-o\/IMG_4334.JPG\" alt=\"Monument to the Argentinian Flag\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monument to the Argentinian Flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Cordoba<\/h2>\n<p>The city of Cordoba remembered me how different a travel experience can be.<\/p>\n<p>I walked in the center on a Saturday afternoon and was a ghost town.<br \/>\nI came back on a Wednesday afternoon and was bustling\u00a0with life.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral is impressive and even more impressive is knowing there was <strong>a clandestine detention center<\/strong> right next to it.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-53XCfnLXW6E\/VceokcGZzuI\/AAAAAAAALEM\/N27CYebgV_s\/s0\/IMG_4484.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-53XCfnLXW6E\/VceokcGZzuI\/AAAAAAAALEM\/N27CYebgV_s\/w800-o\/IMG_4484.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4484.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">I visited both and I recommend the\u00a0Memorial Museum to understand more of what happened during the dictatorship in the 70&#8217;s. The street where it&#8217;s located has lines\u00a0with pictures of the\u00a0<em>desaparecidos<\/em>, the people kidnapped and most likely killed by the military.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-yRXQyhRnlko\/VceoeqbzQKI\/AAAAAAAALD0\/PlJg4tt36Ng\/s0\/IMG_4496.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-yRXQyhRnlko\/VceoeqbzQKI\/AAAAAAAALD0\/PlJg4tt36Ng\/w800-o\/IMG_4496.JPG\" alt=\"Pictures of desaparecidos\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pictures of desaparecidos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">On Wednesday evening I joined a CouchSurfing event called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.couchsurfing.com\/events\/italiano-in-piazza-cordoba-cordoba-2015-07-30\" target=\"_blank\">Italiano in Piazza<\/a>. A dozen Argentinians meet weekly to practice their Italian language!<br \/>\nMany of them have Italians ancestors, that sadly didn&#8217;t teach them the language so they would not be marginalized, and want to reconnect with their roots while others still think that it&#8217;s easy to find a job in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>I was the &#8216;<em>italiano vero&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>for 10 minutes, before Mario, an high school teacher from Naples, arrived &#8211;\u00a0he was more Italian than me.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>San Marcos Sierra<\/h2>\n<p>A 3.5 hours bus to Capilla del Monte followed by a 20 minutes local bus took me to San Marcos Sierra, another hippie and isolated place.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Capilla del Monte and Monte Uritorco, in San Marcos there are no UFO but the energy of the place is quite unique.<\/p>\n<p>A place where cars and buses have to\u00a0wade\u00a0the river, as the tiny bridge is for pedestrians and motorbikes only.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-PIQz-PkjFYg\/Vceo4eucxFI\/AAAAAAAALFU\/rKjBScMvezE\/s0\/IMG_4380.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-PIQz-PkjFYg\/Vceo4eucxFI\/AAAAAAAALFU\/rKjBScMvezE\/w800-o\/IMG_4380.JPG\" alt=\"River crossing in San Marco Sierra\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">River crossing in San Marco Sierra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-GMFSQoh8PdE\/Vceow6TSMoI\/AAAAAAAALE8\/IU4p3t69uOU\/s0\/IMG_4420.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-GMFSQoh8PdE\/Vceow6TSMoI\/AAAAAAAALE8\/IU4p3t69uOU\/w800-o\/IMG_4420.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4420.JPG\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">River crossing in San Marco Sierra. Bonus: kids playing in the water.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">\u00a0A place where if you rent a bicycle the owner doesn&#8217;t\u00a0ask for any deposit, name or even a document. &#8216;You&#8217;ll pay when returning the bike&#8217;, he said.<\/p>\n<p>A place where a street\u00a0dog can follow you 4km, \u00a0swim with you in\u00a0R\u00edo Quilpo and then\u00a0back to\u00a0the village. Wait for you outside of the bungalow and join you at the restaurant. All this for a slice of pizza at the end!<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-flJ-h9dbS6Y\/VceozsxLYOI\/AAAAAAAALFE\/r8Y92PpN-9s\/s0\/IMG_4410.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-flJ-h9dbS6Y\/VceozsxLYOI\/AAAAAAAALFE\/r8Y92PpN-9s\/w800-o\/IMG_4410.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4410.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">A place where everyone is saying that takes 45 minutes to walk up <em>Cerro de la Cruz<\/em>\u00a0when can be done easily in 20. And that&#8217;s not the only<strong> strange thing<\/strong> happening on top of\u00a0<em>Cerro de la Cruz<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A place where there&#8217;s the Hippie Museum, but was closed because they were on holidays \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to Cordoba, don&#8217;t miss San Marcos Sierra!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Villa General Belgrano<\/h2>\n<p>Lonely Planet defines it &#8216;a cultural oddity&#8217; and it&#8217;s spot on. Villa General Belgrano feels like being in the Swiss Alps, with a big German influence and plenty of Tirol-style cafes selling artisanal beer.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s even a big Oktoberfest every year.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-dvQW-AJXEBs\/VceoU3Iw_FI\/AAAAAAAALDU\/_bGN-gWvK40\/s0\/IMG_4508.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"peg-photo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-dvQW-AJXEBs\/VceoU3Iw_FI\/AAAAAAAALDU\/_bGN-gWvK40\/w800-o\/IMG_4508.JPG\" alt=\"Welcome to Villa General Belgrano\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Welcome to Villa General Belgrano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear\">I walked around tie city, visited the tourist office that confirmed me that there&#8217;s not much to do (unless you&#8217;re willing to hike for few hours), climbed up the stairs of the <em>mirador<\/em>, and strolled around the small village.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>La Cumbrecita<\/h2>\n<p>Up in the mountain, the pedestrian-only village of La Cumbrecita is a sleepy places ideal to relax and relax more.<br \/>\nThe road reaching\u00a0La Cumbrecita from Villa General Belgrano is spectacular and remembers me of Tuscany but with more cows.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived in the afternoon and had enough time to visit the waterfall.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-N7kNjInOeN4\/VceoRP6K8ZI\/AAAAAAAALDE\/BxF1OjLvnOQ\/s0\/IMG_4518.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-N7kNjInOeN4\/VceoRP6K8ZI\/AAAAAAAALDE\/BxF1OjLvnOQ\/w800-o\/IMG_4518.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4518.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\u00a0In the evening a strong rain begun and kept pouring down all night till the morning. The scenery from my breakfast table was very different than the day before:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-P4_jwf67cf0\/VceoHdkC-YI\/AAAAAAAALCs\/zqhep6lojHg\/s0\/IMG_4527.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-P4_jwf67cf0\/VceoHdkC-YI\/AAAAAAAALCs\/zqhep6lojHg\/w800-o\/IMG_4527.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4527.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\u00a0I left around noon for Alta Gracia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Alta Gracia<\/h2>\n<p>Alta Gracia means something like &#8216;high grace&#8217; but I didn&#8217;t find it pretty at all.<\/p>\n<p>I almost immediately decided that I would not have spent the night there, so I went straight for the main attraction (for me): the museum of Che Guevara, located in the house where he grow up.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-aQNmpMKoRRY\/Vcen9GRHKQI\/AAAAAAAALCE\/MlFDn58vtHg\/s0\/IMG_4540.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1444\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-aQNmpMKoRRY\/Vcen9GRHKQI\/AAAAAAAALCE\/MlFDn58vtHg\/w800-o\/IMG_4540.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4540.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">\u00a0I arrived there with no money and was hoping to find a bank next to the museum, but the Guevara family was living quite outside of the city!<br \/>\nLuckily the man at the entrance door felt sorry for me and let me enter paying the price for Argentinian citizen: 15 pesos instead of the 75 (~$9 USD) that foreigners have to pay.<\/p>\n<p>I found it quite funny, considering the ideals Che Guevara was after! He fought in Cuba, Congo and Bolivia and now the citizen of those countries have to pay more than Argentinians to visit the museum.<\/p>\n<p>Another highlight of Alta Gracia was the anti-Dengue fumigation going on in the city park: on a Saturday afternoon, when the park was full of people and kids, just to make sure everyone see that the local government is taking actions after the cases of Dengue reported in the area of Cordoba.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-pm88WZ1Fvos\/Vcen7kKhBtI\/AAAAAAAALB8\/eue9KCCP7i4\/s0\/IMG_4545.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1057\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-pm88WZ1Fvos\/Vcen7kKhBtI\/AAAAAAAALB8\/eue9KCCP7i4\/w800-o\/IMG_4545.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4545.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Iguaz\u00fa Waterfalls<\/h2>\n<p>From Cordoba I took a four hours flight to Puerto Iguaz\u00fa, much more than required because it stopped in <strong>Salta<\/strong> but <em>c&#8217;est la vie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I visited both Brazilian and Argentinian sides and to answer the question everyone make of &#8216;which side did you like the most?&#8217; I say Argentinian because I could feel more the dramatic power of the elements, but in Brazil there&#8217;s a better panoramic view of the waterfalls.<\/p>\n<h3>Brazilian side<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-p8X3-ovkgU8\/Vcen4KX9VZI\/AAAAAAAALBs\/IOkLknk9eCY\/s0\/IMG_4556.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1209\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-p8X3-ovkgU8\/Vcen4KX9VZI\/AAAAAAAALBs\/IOkLknk9eCY\/w800-o\/IMG_4556.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4556.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Brazilian side gives the best panorama on the whole complex of\u00a0275 drops, that are extending for much more than my camera can take it.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-nR1nPlHNxeM\/VcenqGCm5DI\/AAAAAAAALA8\/kaq0MW2x3eo\/s0\/IMG_4593.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-nR1nPlHNxeM\/VcenqGCm5DI\/AAAAAAAALA8\/kaq0MW2x3eo\/w800-o\/IMG_4593.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4593.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Walking the trails to get closer to the water is an experience of trust in civil engineering. But OK, the structure stood still and I could get happily wet next to the point where the water drops. The picture above seems photoshopped, but there are platforms that get you close enough to the water to get wet, well, super-wet.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-NeDHbmnI_Po\/Vcemb69_A-I\/AAAAAAAAK8M\/lL7KR8eeBj0\/s0\/IMG_4805.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3236] post-\" data-size=\"2048x1536\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter peg-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-NeDHbmnI_Po\/Vcemb69_A-I\/AAAAAAAAK8M\/lL7KR8eeBj0\/w800-o\/IMG_4805.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4805.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">I visited the <em>garganta del diablo <\/em>(devil&#8217;s throat) as last, tired and without expecting much. This point is <strong>above<\/strong> the waterfalls, and there&#8217;s a long walk on suspended walkway\u00a0to get there. I could not stop thinking about the first indigenous navigating the river and suddenly arriving at the waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">The river forms actually a large lake in that point that gets swallowed in the\u00a0huge hole in the ground that forms the 200+ waterfalls of Iguaz\u00fa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">The fall is\u00a0so hard that the splashes of vaporized water come back up as clouds. The force of the element is breathtaking. The feeling of powerlessness overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">From Iguaz\u00f9 falls, I took a flight\u00a0back to the capital\u00a0for the <em>last nights in Buenos Aires<\/em>.
