{"id":3301,"date":"2015-03-30T15:34:15","date_gmt":"2015-03-30T14:34:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/?p=3301"},"modified":"2015-04-03T20:14:23","modified_gmt":"2015-04-03T19:14:23","slug":"10-days-in-uruguay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/10-days-in-uruguay","title":{"rendered":"10 days in Uruguay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After spending <a title=\"One month in Buenos Aires\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/life\/travels\/one-month-in-buenos-aires\" target=\"_blank\">one month in Buenos Aires<\/a>\u00a0I left Argentina to explore the neighbor country of Uruguay.<br \/>\nA\u00a0tick, penetrating rain accompanied me all the way to BA&#8217;s ferry terminal, clogging the streets of the metropolis and trapping the bus in an endless succession of starts and stops.<br \/>\nI arrived just 5 minutes before the departure of the ferry, too late to find any queue at the immigration desk. An interesting desk, by the way, with the Argentinian and the Uruguayan officials sitting next to each other in the small cubicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\"><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Entering Uruguay\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-Ug8_DoTIC1Q\/VRcvdU02NOI\/AAAAAAAAJ8Y\/M2YLXwcW5Zo\/s0\/IMG_4071.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"Entering Uruguay\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-Ug8_DoTIC1Q\/VRcvdU02NOI\/AAAAAAAAJ8Y\/M2YLXwcW5Zo\/w800-o\/IMG_4071.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4071.JPG\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">I traveled with <a title=\"Buquebus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buquebus.com.uy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buquebus<\/a>\u00a0(<strong>pro tip:<\/strong>\u00a0book from\u00a0their Uruguayan website, or else an extra tax for Argentinian citizen will be added and you&#8217;ll waste time before realizing that foreigner credit cards aren&#8217;t accepted!) and I was expecting somehow a romantic old style ferry with people outside on the wooden deck taking black &amp; white pictures while crossing the Rio Plata.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry was actually a very modern machinery with comfortable seats in a big room with sealed windows and air conditioning.\u00a0In one hour we disembark in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Buquebus boat\" href=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-m00ezgaVQJs\/VRc0J3dO5tI\/AAAAAAAAJ9k\/2Cq3jiSxWzw\/s0\/IMG_4072.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"Buquebus boat\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-m00ezgaVQJs\/VRc0J3dO5tI\/AAAAAAAAJ9k\/2Cq3jiSxWzw\/w800-o\/IMG_4072.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4072.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Buquebus spaceship<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Chilling in\u00a0Colonia del Sacramento<\/h2>\n<p>Arriving to Colonia after one month in Buenos Aires was like the first day of holidays after the graduation exams. Time and space take another order of magnitude crossing\u00a0the <em>R\u00edo del Plata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What the crossing didn&#8217;t left behind, was the crappy weather and the rain! The rest of the day was bad and I focused on work.<\/p>\n<p>The sun was back in place the morning after and I could discover the place:\u00a0Colonia has a beautiful&#8230; colonial&#8230; old town to walk and photograph around.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-XsLIjNbgWfI\/VRc0CELxibI\/AAAAAAAAJ9M\/Fs1LReRLIoA\/w800-o\/IMG_4089.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4089.JPG\" \/><em>Main square, Colonia del Sacramento<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s such a relaxing place that I felt like hitchhiking. It didn&#8217;t take much before someone stopped to give me a ride to <em>Plaza de toros<\/em>, the\u00a0bull ring that is 6km from the old town. This construction is the only bull fighters arena of Uruguay and has\u00a0a strange construction with an English metal structure underneath\u00a0the Spanish-style finishing, now falling in pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-v_YxmxByUqM\/VRczxIJnTdI\/AAAAAAAAJ8k\/QnT5snRdu1U\/s0\/IMG_4117.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-v_YxmxByUqM\/VRczxIJnTdI\/AAAAAAAAJ8k\/QnT5snRdu1U\/w800-o\/IMG_4117.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4117.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Plaza de Toros<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"clear\">I hitchhike also on the way back, when a funny local nurse stopped to rescue me from the excruciating sun.<\/p>\n<p>I spent the rest of the time at the hostel <a title=\"El Viajero Colonia on Tripadvisor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Hotel_Review-g298066-d1150951-Reviews-El_Viajero_Hostel_Suites_Colonia-Colonia_del_Sacramento_Colonia_Department.html\" target=\"_blank\">El Viajero<\/a> that was good fun. They told me all the differences between the\u00a0Argentinian and the Uruguayan way of preparing the\u00a0<em>mate<\/em>, and there are a lot!<\/p>\n<p>My advise is: if you&#8217;ve just few days to visit Buenos Aires, stay there and enjoy the city. If you&#8217;ve more time and\/or you&#8217;re going to Montevideo anyway, then a stop here in definitely worth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Welcoming Montevideo<\/h2>\n<p>Montevideo was a nice surprise. In this city live half of the whole population of Uruguay &#8211; 1.5 out of 3 millions people in a country that had 9 millions cows.\u00a0But despite being a real city it has a relaxing\u00a0vibe, people take their time to answer questions, and more important it has nice beaches on the huge estuary of <em>R\u00edo del Plata<\/em> river. I can&#8217;t remember last time I was on a city with beaches, probably was Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>rambla<\/em> of Montevideo is very much enjoyed by the inhabitants, that are constantly carrying around their <em>mate<\/em>\u00a0and the thermos under their arm. If\u00a0<em>mate<\/em> is popular in Argentina, it&#8217;s <em>by default<\/em> in Uruguay! I even saw people in suite and tie entering the bus with their thermos under the arm, the mate in one hand and the cash for the ticket on the other.<\/p>\n<p>Christian my Salsa contact in Montevideo and his girlfriend took me around the city to see the\u00a0nearby <em>cerro<\/em>\u00a0and the <em>pochita<\/em>\u00a0beach with the big MONTEVIDEO sign.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"View from the cerro\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-v0ukFbTxUIE\/VRcvTDxvSHI\/AAAAAAAAJ74\/oOZxYs9Ivco\/s0\/IMG_4149.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"View from the cerro\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-v0ukFbTxUIE\/VRcvTDxvSHI\/AAAAAAAAJ74\/oOZxYs9Ivco\/w800-o\/IMG_4149.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4149.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>View from the cerro<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-mdL6sdQO2Gg\/VRcvE_oUbyI\/AAAAAAAAJ7Q\/0B0Nlau78Wo\/s0\/IMG_4162.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-mdL6sdQO2Gg\/VRcvE_oUbyI\/AAAAAAAAJ7Q\/0B0Nlau78Wo\/w800-o\/IMG_4162.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4162.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Montevideo&#8217;s beach<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I also enjoyed the\u00a0free walking tour of the city and\u00a0<a title=\"Where to dance Salsa in Montevideo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.danielebesana.com\/blog\/salsa\/where-to-dance-salsa-in-montevideo\" target=\"_blank\">dancing Salsa at night<\/a>, but had no time left to see the\u00a0<em>Museo Andes 1972<\/em>\u00a0that is about the plane accident\u00a0that inspired the movie &#8216;Alive&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Fascist Hippies in Cabo Polonio<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Main square\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-JLVMLcQD_So\/VRcuelsi22I\/AAAAAAAAJ5g\/HpcOH1ytaDQ\/s0\/IMG_4256.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"Main square\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-JLVMLcQD_So\/VRcuelsi22I\/AAAAAAAAJ5g\/HpcOH1ytaDQ\/w800-o\/IMG_4256.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4256.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Cabo Polonio main square<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cabo Polonio is a secluded and magic place. I got there after 3.5 hours of bus, and half hour on a 4wd truck crossing\u00a0the bumpy sand dunes. That was fun.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-taW2LY_9e-Y\/VRcuqmoSiCI\/AAAAAAAAJ6I\/HQdEBTzNsns\/s0\/IMG_4227.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-taW2LY_9e-Y\/VRcuqmoSiCI\/AAAAAAAAJ6I\/HQdEBTzNsns\/w800-o\/IMG_4227.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4227.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Reaching Cabo Polonio on a truck<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cabo Polonio is a small village in a natural reserve\u00a0with unpaved roads and a super-laid-back-hippie atmosphere. Only recently it got electricity and there&#8217;s great attention to the environment.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed in the hostel Viejo Lobo and that&#8217;s where I met <strong>the fascist hippies<\/strong>. There&#8217;s\u00a0wi-fi there, but <strong>only one hour a day<\/strong> from 10pm to 11pm.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Maybe because it&#8217;s a very expensive connection? Maybe because there&#8217;s scarce electricity?<\/p>\n<p>Not at all. There&#8217;s only one hour of internet because the fascist hippies say that otherwise people ain&#8217;t\u00a0social.<br \/>\nI understand that Cabo Polonio is <strong>the perfect place to disconnect from everything<\/strong>\u00a0and forget about the world, but this should be a personal choice\u00a0and not an authoritarian imposition.<\/p>\n<p>There was one guy in the hostel that did nothing but reading his book: was he social?<br \/>\nAnd the dude playing guitar and singing all the afternoon: was he social?<\/p>\n<p>They weren&#8217;t, but if you stay on the PC then you&#8217;re asocial. That was a plain limitation of my personal freedom: let me choose if I want to use internet 1 hour or 1 day, or limit all the asocial activities to one hour: one hour of guitar, one hour of reading, and 4 hours of talking all together, you fascist illiberal\u00a0hippie!<\/p>\n<p>They didn&#8217;t say this detail\u00a0before I paid $20 USD for a modest dorm room (they&#8217;re hippies but they&#8217;re not <em>boludos).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They prefer to keep people ignorant in Cabo Polonio, limiting access to free information and entertainment. But like every regime, the days of the fascist hippies are counted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Some may choose forms and ways that we would not choose for ourselves&#8211;but it is not for us that they are choosing. We can welcome diversity&#8211;the Communists cannot. For we offer a world of choice&#8211;they offer the world of coercion. And the way of the past shows dearly that freedom, not coercion, is the wave of the future.&#8221; &#8211; JFK<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyway, thanks to the absence of Internet we armed a nice group of people from the hostel and had fun together. At least for the 24h I spent in Cabo Polonio, before heading back to freedom \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The empty\u00a0La Pedrera<\/h2>\n<p>Half an house south from Cabo Polonio I reached La Pedrera, another beautiful beach place in the Uruguayan coast.<br \/>\nThe summer season ends in February and this nice town was pretty much a desert with most of the shops already closed.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"La Pedrera, deserted\" href=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-NuNoFef2G80\/VRcuLByqg5I\/AAAAAAAAJ4o\/gXNV1V1oM-E\/s0\/IMG_4287.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"La Pedrera, deserted\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-NuNoFef2G80\/VRcuLByqg5I\/AAAAAAAAJ4o\/gXNV1V1oM-E\/w800-o\/IMG_4287.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4287.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>La Pedrera at night during low season<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll remember the nice beach, the excruciating sun, a <em>porte\u00f1a<\/em>\u00a0that cooked rice and vegetables for me, and the beautiful\u00a0hostel that can host up to 160 people &#8211; but we where 6.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Back to Montevideo and random thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>After those three days on the coast I went back to the capital for one more night of dancing before kissing good-bye to Uruguay.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t expect Uruguay to be so expensive. A traditional\u00a0<em>chivito<\/em> &#8211; a sandwitch with meat, beacon, salad, egg and french fried &#8211; costs the equivalent of $12 USD and hostel dorms are $16 USD up.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"photoswipe\" title=\"Chivito Uruguayo\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-yItIp7OGJZU\/VRc0FNfwDeI\/AAAAAAAAJ9U\/C8sSuVrTCOQ\/s0\/IMG_4076.JPG\"  rel=\"lightbox[3301] post-\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter pe2-photo\" title=\"Chivito Uruguayo\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-yItIp7OGJZU\/VRc0FNfwDeI\/AAAAAAAAJ9U\/C8sSuVrTCOQ\/w800-o\/IMG_4076.JPG\" alt=\"IMG_4076.JPG\" \/><\/a><em>Chivito Uruguayo<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A country\u00a0named &#8216;the Switzerland of Latin America&#8217; not only because of the similar size but also because of similar policies that made it a <strong>fiscal paradise<\/strong> in the past, next to big powers such as Argentina and Brasil.<\/p>\n<p>A society with a <strong>strong\u00a0welfare state<\/strong>, maintained with\u00a0high taxes on industry, and an incredible ex president like Jos\u00e9 Mujica. If you don&#8217;t know him, you&#8217;re missing out and you should check some of his speech or interviews like this one:<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Jose Mujica: &#039;I earn more than I need&#039; - Talk to Al Jazeera\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hteGnL-8SeU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now imagine a whole country that knows his message. That repeats what he says. All the Uruguayans I met liked Mujica.
